Connection Hardware
Today, living or conducting business without the Internet is almost unheard of. Almost every company has a website and almost every service or product may be ordered online. People of all ages surf the Internet, shop online, or even run their own websites and blogs. All this would be impossible without Internet connection hardware installed and working on the computer.
The most well-known and essential connection hardware item is the modem. Simply put, the modem is the device that allows the computer to send and receive data to and from the Internet service provider. There are various types of modems and methods in which these devices will connect to the Internet. A modem may be external or internal, meaning that it is either within the computer itself or a separate, peripheral device that allows for the Internet connection.
The type of connection hardware used will also have an influence in the speed of the Internet access. A modem may connect through dial up, cable, DSL, and even satellite. Dial up simply uses the traditional telephone line to connect to the Internet. Generally, this method is quite slow compared to the other methods. Most people today choose cable, DSL, and satellite that are all significantly faster than dial up.
The DSL connection hardware is one of the most popular ways to access high speed Internet. Typically, the DSL modem works in such a way that is splits the existing telephone line into two parts, or channels. One channel is used for data, or the Internet, and the other is used for voice data, such as telephone calls and fax machines. This method allows the user to talk on the telephone while accessing the Internet. The old dial up method does not allow this duality.
Cable connection hardware is more commonly found in homes although some businesses do make use of these modems as well. The connection is proven to be both fast and extremely reliable. An advantage to using a cable modem, aside from the speed and ease, is that the same company that brings cable television services into the home provides it. Many times, the cable company will offer special packages or offers that include television and Internet bundles for a great rate.
Advances in technology will also bring advances and more options to the connection hardware available for home and business computers. Currently, the most popular devices are the dial up, DSL, and cable modems.
